Yes, the Bastille is on the right bank. However, only a specific section of the right bank (as described in the Right Bank ) section carries that epitaph, the other areasÑsuch as Bastille, the Marais, the 18th Ðare called by their respective names. And for a reason: saying Rive Droite connotes all that is rich, chic, and luxurious in Paris. Bastille, on the other hand, embodies all that is young, hipster, and evolving: the hereditary lineage of the French Revolution that began at the Bastille!
Today's Parisian youth head to the rue Keller and rue de la Charonne to snatch up rock t-shirts and then catch a drink in one of the many bars. One could say that the Bastille is Paris's equivalent of Williamsburg or the East Village: art galleries, young designers, music stores, bars that scout new rock talent, and above all, hipsters! For men: tight blank pants, leather or military jacket, and the ubiquitous rock haircut. For women the choice is a little more interesting since unlike NYC, the inspiration comes less from the thrift store spirit than from an interest in young "arty" designers. Bust out some obscure rock music, tousle your hair, buy a few packets of cigarettes, and prepare to discover some great new designers.
