ABSTRACT
This report includes data regarding apparel retailers selling mainly underwear for adults and children, foundations (bras and corsets), sleepwear for adults and children, swimwear for adults and children, and legwear for adults and children. It does not include the department stores, general clothing stores, mail order catalog companies, etc. that sell this segment of apparel as part of their larger collection. When the term "apparel" is used in the report, this is specifically referring to the above-mentioned subsectors.

Consumers bought more apparel products in 1999 than in 1998, totaling $1.334 million* in 1999. This averages $85 per person. Forty-two percent of consumers buying apparel spent between $47-$116 in 1999. This is an increase from 1998, when the largest group, 31 percent, spent only $23-$47. Consumer purchases in this segment have seen a large increase, 22 percent, since 1995.

This specific apparel branch turnover for 1999, excluding tax, was $203 million. This shows a growth in most of the branch's subsectors from 1998; only the male underwear category saw a negative growth of -2 percent. The average gross profit, taken from the net turnover, was 41 percent in 1999. This was the highest profit margin recorded in the last ten years. Bras and swimwear were the fastest growing categories.

Within this branch, female lingerie and sleepwear accounted for 44 percent of all purchases. Male underwear and sleepwear counted 13 percent, legwear 17 percent, and 26 percent other.

The Netherlands has 685 apparel companies in this branch and 800 stores. The companies can be broken down into the following categories: small (58 percent, net turnover less than $232,558), medium (31 percent, turnover between $232,558-$465,116) and large (11 percent, turnover larger than $465,116). Department stores have 24 percent of the apparel market, but are not included in this report. Clothing and textile stores (the focus of this report) sell 50 percent of the apparel products and represent the largest sales points for the market.

The largest apparel stores in the Netherlands, which include some franchises, are: Livera, part of the Intres formula (136 outlets), Hunkemoller (119 outlets), Jambelle (45 outlets), Lindessa (35 outlets), LinCherie (31 outlets).

The location of most apparel stores are in large shopping areas, whether it be a shopping street or mall. These locations account for 73 percent. Smaller shopping areas score only 16 percent, while the minority are at more isolated locations.

Roughly 2,790 people work in this apparel branch, of which 780 are employers and 2010 employees.

The Netherlands counts 15.8 million consumers. This can be broken down into the following age categories: 19 percent between 0-15 years, 12 percent between 15-25 years, 45 percent between 25-55 years, and 24 percent above 55 years. The age group 25-55 is the target market for this branch. These consumers of apparel are seeking quality, a good fit and pleasing models.

Existing trends point to a positive future for these apparel segments in the Netherlands, especially for women's underwear and swimwear. In particular, under-wire bras, string underwear and bikini swimwear are popular. Consumers not only see this branch as part of their shopping experience ("fun shopping"), but are also willing to spend more money on these articles.
