ABSTRACT
This report includes data regarding retailers specifically in apparel accessories such as hats, scarves, ties, non-leather bags, umbrellas, gloves and jewelry. It does not include the department stores, mail order catalog companies, etc. that sell accessories as part of their larger collection. Almost half of the sales in accessories are through clothing and textile retailers (included in report). Department stores sell almost 20 percent and sports stores sell roughly 6 percent.

Accessory sales in 1999 reached 437 million dollars ($28 per capita). This represents a 9 percent increase in volume turnover since 1998. One of the reasons for the increase is due to the continuing 70's apparel trend, which calls for a lot of accessories.

Sixty percent of accessories are bought at the same time as apparel purchases. During the 1998-1999 winter season, the following accessories were bought by women along with an apparel purchase: 36 percent bought a scarf, 19 percent jewelry, 14 percent a handbag, and 12 percent gloves. Men also buy accessories along with clothing such as the following: 39 percent bought a tie, 31 percent a belt, 9 percent a scarf, 7 percent gloves and 4 percent a hat.
Although ties are being wore less at the workplace, those men buying ties are willing to spend more money per tie than before. This results in a relatively stable tie market. Thirty-one percent of men do not wear ties, 22 percent seldom wear them, 21 percent occasionally, 15 percent often, 8 percent quite often, and 3 percent wear ties on a regular basis.

The Dutch hat market is limited, except for hats worn in winter. However, dollar value of the men's hat market is growing because men are increasingly willing to pay more for a better quality hat.
The umbrella market is dependent on the weather, as 95 percent are bought when it is raining. Due to the rainy year of 1998, the umbrella market was very good.

Other accessories, such as jewelry and bags, are following the trend toward sophistication in its simplicity. Popular clothing brands are increasingly entering the accessory market, especially with jewelry, watches and bags.

The Netherlands has roughly 424 accessory retail outlets. However, there are also 1160 stores that sell equal amounts of apparel and accessories (categorized under 'clothing and accessories'). These can be broken down into: 55 hat stores, 320 male accessory stores, 240 women's accessories, and 540 accessory stores.

During 1998, the number of store outlets increased by 6 percent, while the number of enterprises decreased.

Most of the accessory stores are small businesses (net turnover less than $350,000). The only store that has more than 7 outlets is the Tie Rack, which has 8 outlets. There are no known collective buyer groups.

The location of most apparel stores is in large shopping areas, whether it is a shopping street or mall. These locations account for 62 percent. Smaller shopping areas score only 14 percent, while 24 percent are at more isolated locations.

Employees in this branch include 890 men and women, of which 55 percent are entrepreneurs or assisting family members.

The Netherlands counts 15.8 million consumers. This can be broken down into the following age categories: 19 percent between 0-15 years, 12 percent between 15-25 years, 45 percent between 25-55 years, and 24 percent above 55 years.
Fifty-two percent of consumers feel that wearing accessories is important. The age group 45-55 is the target market for this group, as they are the most interested in accessorizing. Scarves are most popular for those over 55, jewelry with 25-35 year olds, and ties with 35-45 year olds.
