ABSTRACT According to data released by the Central Statistic Office (GUS) the total 1999 knitwear and hosiery market was reported to be worth USD 205 million.
In 1999, the domestic production of hosiery and knitwear amounted to USD 390 million. This data reflects only manufacturers with 50 or more workers. The actual figure is much higher because small manufacturers (less than 50 employees) that account for a substantial share of market are not included in these statistics. Almost 50% of the domestic production is knitted apparel, 22% - hosiery, 21% - knitted underwear, 5% - fancy products, and the remaining 2% - knitted headgear. The strongest growth rates in volumes were reported in knitted apparel up 15% and tights up 10%.
In 1999, Polish exports of knitwear and hosiery were reported to be worth USD 430 million. About 86% of these exports were directed to European Union countries (EU), mainly Germany, Denmark, and France. About 10% of these exports went to Central & Eastern European markets, mainly Russia, the Czech Republic and Ukraine. Polish exports can be broken down to sweaters, turtlenecks, pullovers and cardigans - 25%; women and girls apparel combinations, jackets, blazers, dresses, skirts, trousers and shorts - 16%; T-shirts and knitted cottons and other yarns - 14.5%; hosiery accounted for 7% of total exports and were mainly directed to Central & Eastern European countries (CEE), but included Italy, Germany and the Netherlands.
In 1999, Poland imported USD 245 million worth of knitted apparel and accessories. About 50% of imports originated from EU countries, such as Italy, Denmark, Germany, and France. China was the biggest single exporter to Poland. T-shirts and tricots followed by sweaters, polo jumpers, and pullovers dominated Polish imports. In addition, knitted underwear retains a substantial share of imports. Hosiery represented 16% of total imports. Italy was the largest exporter of hosiery products to Poland (70 % of the total Polish hosiery imports), followed by South Korea, Netherlands, and Germany.
