ABSTRACT For 1999, sales of fabrics made in Poland were worth USD 1.5 billion, according to the Main Statistical Office (GUS)and based on the European Classification of Activities (ECA). This figure is based on the sales of companies that have at least 50 employees and thus does not include revenues of small to medium sized companies. Cotton and cotton-like fabrics represented the largest share in volume, followed by silk fabrics, woolen and wool-like fabrics, flaxen, hemp and plush. The value of sales in fiber pre-treatment and spinning was USD 300 million. Increases in production volumes were reported in cotton and cotton-like yarns (mostly card), woolen yarns, and flaxen-hemp yarns. The sales of fabric textiles with knits and crochet loops amounted to USD 130 million. Investments in the fabric sector remains relatively high with USD 63 million recorded in the first 9 months of 1999. Over USD 48 million of these investments were for machinery and high-tech manufacturing technologies.
For 1999, Poland's fabric exports were estimated at USD 120 million. The biggest Polish fabric export was in synthetic fiber fabrics - 25.6%, and synthetic staple fiber fabrics - 22.5%. These exports went mainly to Germany, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Ukraine and the US, as well as other Central and East European countries (CEE). Poland also exports cotton fabrics (18% of total fabric exports) mainly to Germany, the CEE markets, Great Britain, and France. The third largest fabric export is wool - 14%, mainly to EU, CEE, Canada and the US. Fabrics made of processed staple fibers - 7% of exports, went mainly to Germany and Saudi Arabia. Fabrics made of continuous processed fiber yarns were exported to Germany and some CEE countries. Exports of knitted fabrics were worth USD 57 million went mainly to CEE markets.
For 1999, Polish imports of fabrics were worth USD 1.2 billion. Cotton fabrics dominated the imports, with 31% of total 1999 imports. About 80% of latter originated from EU countries (EU), such as Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. The second biggest group of imports was synthetic staple fiber fabrics, 25% of total fabric imports originating mainly from Germany, South Korea, the Netherlands, France, and Italy. In third place with 15% each of the fabric imports there was continuous synthetic fiber fabrics, mainly from EU countries and Southeast Asia, and woolen fabrics mainly from Italy, Germany, and France. Imports of processed staple fibers and processed continuous fibers came in fourth with each about 8-10% of total imports, mainly from EU countries. In fifth place with each about 2% of total imports, were flax fabrics originating from Italy and Germany, and silk fabrics from India and China.
For 1999, Polish imports of knitted fabrics amounted to USD 213 million, with EU countries supplying most of these fabrics (88% of total Polish imports of knitted fabrics).
