ABSTRACT How do you know if the price is right? If you are a buyer, have you ever wondered what everyone else is paying for their merchandise? You may be an excellent negotiator, but how do you know that the factory that you are dealing with is more or less in line with the market? And if you are a factory manager, how do you know if you are competitive? To help you, Clothesource has introduced PriceTrak, a quarterly publication.
PriceTrak is more than a consultant's theory of what prices ought to be. It's an analysis of the actual landed price paid on every garment imported into the EU and the USA. So you can see exactly what everyone is paying, and benchmark your performance - or your suppliers'.
Wages and landed prices don't correlate Theory says that if you go to a low cost country, you will pay less for the finished garments that you buy. We've tracked typical wage costs in the EU's 50 largest supplying countries. And we've taken the net labour costs that a leading consultant says 'ought' to apply. PriceTrak then shows average, pre-duty, landed costs. There's just no correlation.
Why wages aren't the key Prices in developing countries don't reflect labour costs because:
· Labour accounts for under 20% of apparel manufacturing costs - but 85% in rich countries · Those other costs are often higher in developing countries · There are a host of other costs manufacturers in developing countries need to manage
PriceTrak is designed: · for apparel buyers. To track competitiveness, and to provide an indication of current pricing. · for apparel sellers. To keep track of prices other sellers are getting.
How PriceTrak works Every month, PriceTrak analyses the landed price of every garment that is imported into the EU and the USA. These prices let you make like-for-like comparisons between countries. You will also be able to compare prices paid by customers in the EU and the USA. When you subscribe, every quarter you will be sent a print copy of PriceTrak analysing 30 product categories from 120 countries. We think this is a far better way to keep track of what you ought to be paying. This exceptional tool will also help you in a number of other ways:
· You can compare what you are paying with what the rest of the world is paying and adjust accordingly · You can judge if you are in the country that works best for you · You will have an excellent negotiating tool at your disposal
The result is a mass of data that can easily confuse. So in our standard reports, we then edit it all down. The way we edit may not always suit all our subscribers, so we suggest subscribers come back to us if they need the data tweaking in some way.
But it is important to understand how PriceTrak works. So we strongly recommend that you read through the brochure. Use the sample link below this summary.
New: PriceTrak now helps buyers convert landed prices to prices with duty added. There is no simple way of doing this, as duty depends on a many different conditions, but PriceTrak now contains an indication of minimum and maximum duty for each country/garment for both the EU and US. In addition to this, you can now find out the average duty actually imposed on each exporting country/garment by the US.
